Quick Overview

Tesguino is Tarahumara 'maize beer'. It is used in all rituals, festivals, dances and ceremonies. Drinking tesguino at ceremonies marks the turning point in a person's life. A boy begins to drink tesguino when he announces himself a man. A girl begins drinking tesguino at festivals as a sign she is looking for a husband.


The Tarahumara believe the drink has healing powers so it is also given with the mother's milk to an infant to keep it from sickness. It is also used in "curing" a new-born baby, a shaman sprinkles some tesguino over it to make it strong.



The Tarahumara believe that the dead wouldn't rest, in fact would return to harm those living if tesgüino weren't set aside for them.



The proper etiquette to offer tesguino must be observed. A host selects a man to distribute the tesguino among his guests by offering him three drinking-gourds full of tesguino, after emptying the three gourds he then enters upon his duty by giving every man three gourds in succession and four to every woman.
