Quick Overview

Tlaloc is commonly known as the Aztec god of rain, fertility, and water. He usually gave life and sustenance to humans by providing rains at opportune times to provide abundant harvests.

But Tlaloc is much older than the Aztecs. In fact, this god was worshipped in Mesoamerica before the Aztecs even settled in the valley of Mexico. He was prominent in Teotihuacan at least 800 years before the Aztecs. The Maya knew him as Chaac and the Zapotec knew him as Cocijo.

The Aztecs also recognized Tlaloc as the lord of the previous third world sun which was destroyed by fire. In their capital Tenochtitlan, one of the two shrines on top of the Great Temple was dedicated to Tlaloc.

But although the god could be benevolent, he was also feared for his ability to send hail, thunder and lightning, and for being the lord of the powerful element of water. To appease him, he is known to have demanded child sacrifices.
