Quick Overview

The process of Christianization has at times been relatively peaceful and at times has been a very violent process, ranging from political conversions to adopt Christianity to military campaigns to force conversion onto native populaces.

The conquistadors brought with them many missionaries to promulgate the Catholic religion. Natives were taught the Roman Catholic religion and the language of Spain and forced to accept a de facto enslavement. Gradually through the intermingling of Spanish Catholic and native beliefs and customs Christianity especially Roman Catholicism became the official religion of Mexico.
