Before the Spanish colonization of the Americas in the 15th and 16th centuries, fantastic pre-Columbian societies flourished in what is commonly referred as Mesoamerica. Some of these societies matured into advanced civilizations such as the: Olmec, Teotihuacan, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Huastec, Purepecha, Toltec and Mexica (Aztecs), and flourished for nearly 4,000 years before first contact with Europeans. These indigenous civilizations are credited with many inventions in: building pyramid-temples, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, writing, highly accurate calendars, fine arts, intensive agriculture, engineering, an abacus calculator, a complex theology, and yes even the wheel (although without any draft animals, the wheel was used only as a toy).

The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire began in February 1519. Indigenous accounts indicate the Aztec emperor Moctezuma believed that the strangers arriving at the coast were gods that had come to reclaim the throne of the empire based on an old yet unfulfilled prophesy. These accounts described seven omens that were believed to have occurred 10 years prior to the arrival of the Spanish indicating the old prophesy was being fulfilled.
